cheaper food
has anyone seen the movie 'we feed the world'? well i watched it yesterday in dutch (achievment of the week) and found it quite unpleasant... no not the dutch part... its not that i learnt a lot of new things about globalisation, genetic modification and general human cruelty, its more that i had been hiding my conscience quite successfully up until now, shopping at supermarkets etc and that movie blew its cover! one of the things brought to our attention is that the amount of bread thrown away each day without being sold in the largest city of one european country is enough to feed the second largest city of that country... will someone explain to me why we need to genetically modify our food? www.we-feed-the-world.at/en/index.htm check it out!

dont even get me started. Some of the profs here are very involved in fighting the GM thing in Africa. Dont worry James there are people on this and they are big movers and shakers in the science.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday by the way! and George sends her love as well.
whoa boy, whoa.
ReplyDeleteits okay, your mother still loves you.
You're right, the GM thing is a bit of a tiger in tigers clothing and wastage of food is something that really shows up what a market economy is all about. Unfortunately until we come up with an alternative (or maybe just making it beautifully efficient) its going to be very difficult to get around.
maybe i'm not explaining it well. ButYou want bread. You like fresh bread (at least bread with out mold on it). Last week you bought a loaf on tues and thursday. This week you discoverd nutella and ate 4 loaves. your nutella is now empty and next week you'll only by 1 loaf. How does the shop owner get around your erratic consumption behaviour? he carries stock so that you can walk in and get a fresh loaf whenever you feel like. it keeps you full of fresh nutella and bread, but it also leads to wastage.
so bar us all making all the things we need all the time(and leaving not much time to do the other things that we're good at), how do we get around food wastage? which means that there's a food shortage somewhere else, which is the fuel in engine that drive monsanto and their dangerous GM bandwagon.
Don't know what the scientist's are doing about it though? didn't know there was funding in anti-GM banter.
bravo! now we're getting somewhere... someone (who is anonymous and why do they keep posting on my web blog?) is taking responsibility for their actions...
