pyjamas and wheelbuilding

so i find myself with some time on my hands. time to think about just how perfect pyjamas are for building wheels in, and put it to the test. this mornings wheel brings the total in the house to 12. i have a very tolerant girlfriend, only 2 of them are hers :-) but as any bike nerd knows, each one is special for its own reasons. and yes im talking about bike wheels here. this mornings wheel is a rigida dp18 built on a white industries eccentric eno with dt swiss competition spokes, to be used on my cyclocross bike. if all goes according to plan in races, either fixed or singlespeed, i havent decided.

i also finally got round to making a base for the wheeltrueing stand, which is important as its gonna get even more use over the coming days. last saturday night saw a sneaky conversion of a donated shimano 105 road hub from 7 to 9 speed freehub body, and a shimano deore lx mtb hub from 9 to 7 speed. the lx hub is only being used as a singlespeed anyway, and this means i have a set of road hubs to discover is there really is anything to the idea that tubular tires are the better

It seems my drumset is losing space. 12 wheels and at least 4 bikes vs. one drumset. I will definitely need that extra large, zebra print rubber base for it to challenge your puny wheel-building stand and mark some territory. Very tolerant girlfriend, yes, but every instrument is also very special for its own reasons...it is beginning to feel not only neglected but now also overcrowded. Perhaps its time to loose the couch? I wont miss the desk either ;-)

  2. Remember to introduce your new girlfriend, only know the previous one!
I love wheel building posts like this. DP18 is a bit overrated I think, but I recently also swapped internals between RX100 8speed and Exage 7speed hubs to accommodate 126 and 130mm frames (without wanting to spread them). Cool tools, what spokes do you prefer? I usually end up with speccing Sapim to my wheel builder - I have given up on building them myself, it's an art and by experience not too many master it. I have total confidence you have the right spirit to make them outstanding!
BTW love the Crazy Bob tires, will put one on my kid's trailer bike soon ;-)

  3. i really like building with dt swiss revolution spokes and alu nipples. preferably the taperlock alu nipples, but these are pricey... but for an everyday wheel i use dt swiss competition spokes. i have been experimenting with different lacing patterns recently. my road wheelset has a 2x front wheel and a 3x drive-side, radial non-drive side set up. oh and i would be happy to build your next set of wheels for you, maurice :-)

  4. yeah, that's because your weight is half of mine ;-)
I use sturdy 36h rims/hubs, Sapim Race or indeed DT Comp spokes with brass nipples
